Everyone experiences an upset stomach from time to time. It's a quite common condition, and is seldom reason for worry. However, since there are a host of different reasons why people have upset stomachs, it is worth listening to your body when it lets you know something is wrong, because there is a small chance that it can be something that needs medical attention.
One of the most common reasons for the condition is something called reflux oesophagitis or acid reflux. The condition is cause by acid leaving the stomach, back up the esophagitis, which is the tube that connects your throat with your stomach. If for some reason the muscle sealing your stomach doesn't close properly, and your body is a horizontal position, acid reflux might happen.
Counter Stools
Another common cause is ulcers, which often are mistaken for acid reflux because of the similar symptoms. The clue you want to look for if you are black stools and unintended weight loss, which most likely points to ulcers, and is also when you want to contact your doctor for an appointment. Ulcers are usually treated with antibiotics, since the condition is caused by bacteria.
Other symptoms of an upset stomach are general stomach pains, heartburn, constipation, irregular bowel movement, and a taste of bile in your mouth. Common triggers, or foods and beverages that can worsen the symptoms, are alcohols, coffee, onions, fatty food, and citrus. Now, upset stomachs are seldom anything to worry about, and sometimes you don't even have to see a doctor because it goes over just as fast as it started. However, there are some symptoms that you should take seriously and contact a doctor as soon as you see them. These include unexpected weight loss, sharp and sudden pains, fatigue, and bloody, black, or tar-like stools, and vomiting blood or coffee grounds-like liquid.
There are several cures for an upset stomach, but these of course depend on the underlying reasons for the condition you are experiencing. As we touched upon earlier, ulcers can be treated with antibiotics. Acid reflux, on the other hand, can be treated with acid neutralizers that are either prescribed by the doctor, if the symptoms are severe, or bought over the counter, if the symptoms are mild. There are also a good deal of alternative remedies that claim to help you treat your symptoms, but these do not have the clinical backing of FDA approved medicine.
