Hemorrhoids - Causes and Hemorrhoids Treatments

Hemorrhoids are swollen, painful veins in your rectum. Hemorrhoids may develop from two different places. There are 2 sets of veins that draw out the blood from the lower rectum and anus; these are the internal and external veins.

Internal vein- when vein becomes swollen, it forms internal hemorrhoids. This type of condition, unless truly severe, cannot be seen nor felt unlike external hemorrhoids.

External vein- Similarly, the external veins may swell to form external hemorrhoids. This type of condition can be seen and felt outside of the anus.

Causes

Hemorrhoids are thought to be common and likely to occur in up to half the population by age 50. This condition is usually associated with constipation and straining during bowel movements and pregnancy. It is widely believed that these conditions may cause increased pressure on the haemorrhoid veins, making them swollen and painful. Liver disease may also increase the pressure in the veins and cause hemorrhoids.

Symptoms

The most common symptom of internal hemorrhoids is painless bleeding. Bright red bloods on the outside of stool, on the toilet paper or dripping in the toilet are tell-tale signs that you may be suffering from internal hemorrhoids. Fortunately bleeding does not last for long.

Note that this type of condition can possibly lead to a condition called prolapsed hemorrhoids wherein the internal hemorrhoids swell and then extends through the anus. Hemorrhoids may be felt at your anus from the outside when this occurs. To remedy this, you may gently push the swelling mass back through the anus. However, if the hemorrhoids cannot be pushed back, it may become even more swollen and may be trapped outside the anus. If this is the case, it's best to see a doctor.

External hemorrhoids may form an extremely painful condition called thrombosed hemorrhoids. This occurs when blood clots occurs in a hemorrhoids vein. The vein becomes painful and even more swollen. The pain is at its worst when sitting or with bowel movement. While there are known hemorrhoids cure, it's best that you see a doctor first for examination and treatment.

Treatment

Hemorrhoid treatment will depend on the severity of the condition. Often, treatment for this type of condition may be done at home.

Hot Sitz Baths- A hot sitz bath is where the pelvic region is immersed in warm water. It is a simple yet effective hemorrhoids treatment. A hot sitz bath lessens the pain and reduces swelling. It's best to do a sitz bath 3 times a day and after each bowel movement for 15 minutes.

Dietary change- Eat more vegetable rich in fiber, bran and drink a lot of liquids in order to make stools softer and bulkier is also a good hemorrhoid treatment. Hard stools are known to contribute greatly to hemorrhoids.

Laxative- Laxatives may also relieve hemorrhoids. However, be cautious in terms of choosing a laxative for your constipation. If the laxative you chose causes runny or watery stools, it may worsen the condition and lead to infection in the anus.

Sitting restrictions- Many doctors advise that people suffering from hemorrhoids must not sit for a long duration of time. If you must, sitting on an air doughnut is best.

Over-the-Counter Medications- Many hemorrhoid creams, ointments and suppositories are available to relieve this condition. However, it's best to consult your doctor first before purchasing any of these over-the-counter treatments.

Prevention

While there is no definite ways to avoid hemorrhoids, a high-fiber diet can prevent this type of condition. Avoid straining at bowel movement is also a good way to prevent hemorrhoids but this is not a way to effectively eliminate the risk.
