In the modern world, a kitchen is incomplete without a breakfast slab or bar. These bars can be easily seen in the upscale homes, and it is very obvious for us to think of it and have one for our kitchen as well. Apart from there appealing looks, they are extremely functional in modern kitchens. A breakfast bar is usually rather basic and bland: essentially it is little more than a wooden plank. Purchasing a breakfast slab for you can be a bit costly. So, it's better to build your own breakfast bar yourself and that too in a very less amount.

In order to make your own breakfast bar, firstly you need to find a kitchen cabinet which has been taken out from a house. You can find these cabinets by contracting a person who does home remodeling like a local contractor, by looking in newspaper (in classifieds section), and at garage sales. Second thing you need is the counter top. They are easily available at the local hardware stores (Lowe's, Home Depot). You can even search for them in a garage sale or look in classified section of newspaper, etc. It is always better to use a cabinet which have drawers and shelves in them. They add functionality and extra storage space to a breakfast bar.

It is very important to decide where to place the breakfast bar. In case you are planning to place a breakfast bar on an island, you will have to choose a backing such as a wallboard which can be placed behind the cabinet. Whereas if you placing the cabinet against a wall, you need not have any backing.

It is very important to buy some brackets (L shaped) from local hardware stores so as to allow you to attach the counter tops to the cabinets and even the breakfast bar to the floor.

If you have a plan to add an electrical point to the bar, then you should prefer to have it underside of the bar. By this way there will be less chance of electrical short circuits and functionality of the bar also increases. The last step to complete your breakfast bar is to buy some bar stools. You can easily get them from your hardware store, local wall mart etc.
