The best way of treating constipation depends on a number a number of factors. In some instances medical intervention is definitely called for, but in most cases a mild over-the-counter product and some simple diet and lifestyle changes can solve the problem.
Lifestyle change - the first line of defense

In cases of mild irregularity, the first step should be to review your diet and exercise patterns and make adjustments. Start eating high fiber foods, drink more water and other non-alcoholic and non-caffeinated fluids, and get more exercise. For many people, these simple changes alone can clear up a mild case of irregularity within a few days.
Over-the-counter products and how they work
Non-prescription treatments for irregularity, used responsibly and selected carefully, can provide safe and swift relief. Consumers should understand that not all commercially available treatments are laxatives, and not all laxatives work the same way.
In choosing an irregularity treatment, it's important to understand what the various products do and what to expect from them in terms of relief. Choose the type that's best for you.
Bulk-formers (fiber supplements) - Bulk-former (like Metamucil or Citrucel) are generally considered the gentlest and safest type of laxative. They work by passing though the stomach undigested, then absorbing water as they pass through the intestines. This produces softer, bulkier stool which in turn naturally prompts the intestinal muscles to contract normally and move the waste through the colon. Bulk-formers are generally safe for long-term use, but may cause gas and bloating. Stool Softeners - These products (like Kaopectate, for example) add moisture to the stool, making it softer and easier to pass. These products are not designed to add bulk to the stool or to otherwise stimulate the intestinal muscles, but rather to make expelling stool easier. If straining to pass hard, dry stool is part of your problem, these products could help. Hypersomotics - These laxative products (such as epsom salts and Milk of Magnesia) work by drawing water from surrounding tissues into the colon. This both softens dry or hardened stool and stimulates intestinal muscle activity, helping move the stool through through the colon. These products work relatively quickly, but are not recommended for long-term use. Stimulants - Stimulant laxatives do exactly what the name implies: they work by triggering muscle contractions in the intestine, which moves the stool through the colon. Stimulant laxatives are manufactured both in oral form (Ex-Lax and Senokot, for example) and for rectal application (Fleet, Colace, and others). Stimulant laxatives tend to work both promptly and effectively and are among the most popular non-prescription irregularity treatments. However, they should be used with caution; they may have side effects such as bloating, stomach cramps, and nausea, and they may not be appropriate for people with kidney or heart disease, high blood pressure, or allergies.
